Use cedar matches, if feasible.  If you prefer to use a lighter, make confident it is butane lighter to keep away from robust odors.

Heat  pipe tobacco  of the cigar (aka 'the foot' of the cigar) gradually more than the flame, without touching it to the fireplace.  Let a black ring form all around the stop.

Spot the cigar in your mouth and draw in slowly and gradually.  Keep the cigar more than the flame, about half an inch over it, yet again with no touching.  Keep on to attract in till the cigar draws the flame.   Change the cigar slowly, spinning it to build an even burn up.

When your cigar is lit, take it out of your mouth and notice the burn off you have proven.  If the burn up seems to be uneven, basically blow on the unlit sections to attract the burn up, and then just take one or two attracts from the cigar to reestablish an even melt away.
